Rome’s eminence James Parefoy at Toronto film festival

Recognized as Mark Antony of American-British-Italian historical drama television series ‘Rome‘, James Purefoy’s movie, ‘Solomon Kane’ made world debut in Toronto international film festival this month. Telling about his character in the movie he said, “He starts off as a bad guy and has to seek redemption after … this guy tells him he’s going to go to hell. And he decides, no, that’s not going to happen and then spends two years in a monastery, trying to atone for his sins. And then everybody gets chucked out of the monastery and he goes on a journey …”

He further told that this character’s unique trait was that he did not used to offer words but spoke only when something was asked to him. The following scene is from the movie itself and we can watch him playing the character of Kane.

There are many other big proposals coming on his way because of the fame he achieved by playing the character in the highly appreciated TV show ‘Rome‘. He got this movie also because of his good acting in ‘Rome’.

“James wasn’t initially in the front of my mind for Kane,” said the writer/ director Michael J. Bassett, “because he has a sort of contemporary vibe. But seeing Rome, and the fantastic work he did in that, and then getting him in and showing him the artwork and talking to him about the character and that conversation evolving the character to new places …” you can assess yourself.

Remembering about ‘Rome’ Purefoy smilingly said, “People love that show; they just love it.” Then his smiling face changed to sadness and he irritably said, “It was supposed to run three seasons. The third season was supposed to be all set in Egypt. I don’t know why it was cancelled.”

I completely agree with him and wanted that the show should have been continued for at least third season but without caring for the feelings of the fans the show was cancelled after second season.

While reviewing the second season of Rome, Alessandra Stanley from The New York Times said “But behind all that gritty squalor the glory that was Rome gets lost”. Rome received a B from Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly and the lady also commented on “spectacular” clothing design of the series. Rolling Stone Magazine’s Sean Woods gave Rome 3 and a half of 4 and he also called the series ‘masterful’ and ‘epic’. As per the words of James Poniewozik from Time Magazine, the show was slow in the beginning but it drew one to the ancient city of Rome. As per the reviews of Robert Bianco from USA Today, the first season of Rome was better than the second one. The reviewer of Empire Magazine Helen O’Hara said that Rome was rich in terms of history and texture. To Melanie McFarland from Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the second season of Rome was as good as the first season. A reviewer from The Guardian called the series “splendidly ambitious”. Rome: Caesarion

Historical dramas never fail to interest me unless they are shoddily made. It could be due to the fact that we don’t get to see many historical shows and even those which are made, are more of costume dramas than anything else. ‘Rome’ was a fascinating series that enthralled the viewers with its grandeur and in depth research. It has, in fact, become a sort of touchstone against whom all historical series will be measured. The episode that I found most memorable and moving was titled ‘Caesarion’. In the beginning of the episode, Caesar follows Pompey into Egypt and meets the boy king, Ptolemy XIII. He gets extremely agitated when presented with severed head of Pompey and demands the beheading of killer. He also asks Egyptians to pay the debts that they owe to Rome otherwise he would side up with Cleopatra, the disinherited sister of Ptolemy XIII, who is also vying for the throne.

Vorenus and Pullo save Cleopatra from assassins sent by Ptolemy XIII, and while Vorenus defies her orders to impregnate her, Pullo complies happily before returning her to Caesar. Caesar makes love to her through out the night while guards attack his fortress and besiege it. Servilia and Octavia enjoy a lesbian sex night quite unaware of what’s happening.

Back in Rome, Anthony warns Cicero that if he ever heard his name in rumors of treason he would demanuate him and conveys the news of Caesar’s victory over Ptolemy XIII and his faction in the Senate. He also relays the fact that Caesar is now the supreme ruler of Egypt.

Back in Egypt, cheering soldiers welcome Caesar and Cleopatra and their baby boy. An unaffected Vorenus keeps staring and in an ephemeral moment perceives the fading love of soldiers for Caesar.

This particular episode was not so much about the great historical moments but it was more about the sensitive and dramatic portrayal of characters and how turn of events affects their lives. Kevin McKidd winks to the ‘Grey’s Anatomy Fans’

Scottish actor Kevin McKidd, who’s very well known for his roles on HBO’s ‘Rome’ and NBC’s short lived drama ‘Journeyman’, is appearing on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.

Hurrah! ‘Rome’ fans who’re eager to watch their favorite celebrities, would like to say ‘Thanks’ to the creators. Now, you may catch him there playing a US Army Surgeon Owen Hunter. So, the man has set all his plans to raise your heart beats once again. On ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, he catches the eye of Dr. Cristina Yang, being portrayed by Sandra Oh. Well, after series’ announcement about season 5, there’re speculations about a new hottie? But I was not in hope to see Kevin…. And when I first watched him on ‘Grey’s’…. I felt very happy and it reminded me the days of ‘Rome’. ‘Rome’ came to an end just after two seasons, but it was a show which must have been given some more seasons. But unluckily, we’re left in mid by the creators.

To be honest, ‘Rome’ would never be back but you can please your lust by watching your favorite stars on some other shows e.g. ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. Currently, it’s running with season 5. Well, Kevin has signed an agreement to appear in 11 episodes, but if things remain okay, he may join the cast, as a regular member. I think, it’d be great to watch a man, who was previously seen in a historical drama, with medical instruments in his hand……

As of now, it’s cool to see him in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’…. And I wish him to sign some more episodes. I’m already very much impressed by his appearance on ‘Rome’ as Lucius Vorenus’. He was one of the two soldiers, who struggled hard to manage his personal trusts, his dedication towards his nation, his duty to superiors, and his need to fulfill the needs of his family and friends as well. Hmm…. We’ll never see him portraying the very same role.
